What it is

The Visual Arts Cooperative (VAC) is a regional artist cooperative whose members are selected through a jury process conducted by current VAC artists. The cooperative presents monthly exhibitions in the Arts Council's Scout Hall gallery, showcasing original artwork across a variety of styles and media while fostering collaboration and professional growth among regional artists. Since partnering with the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in 2003, the VAC has remained an important part of the organization's mission to support and celebrate the visual arts throughout the region.

Member information & Expectations

  • The Visual Arts Cooperative offers full-time and half-time memberships.

    • Full-time members exhibit new work 11 months per year.

    • Half-time members exhibit new work 5–6 months per year.

    • January is the only month when new artwork is not installed.

  • Annual membership dues:

    • $225 – Full-time membership

    • $125 – Half-time membership

    • Arts Council membership is included with both options.

  • Members are expected to provide one new large artwork for each month they are scheduled to exhibit.

    • Large works may be wall-mounted or displayed on a pedestal.

  • Artists are encouraged to submit Art in Miniature pieces.

    • Maximum size: 8 × 10 inches

    • Maximum price: $75

    • Unsold miniatures must be retrieved after three months.

  • Matted Miniatures are also accepted.

    • Must be matted to fit a standard-size frame.

    • Must include sturdy backing.

    • Must be protected in a clear sleeve.

    • Unsold pieces must be retrieved after three months.

  • Featured artists may display multiple works in the gallery window during their exhibition month.

  • The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri retains a 20% commission on all artwork sold through the gallery.

  • The Visual Arts Cooperative's fiscal year begins each July.

  • The preferred application period is May and June, with accepted artists beginning their membership in July.

  • Applications are accepted year-round. Depending on membership availability, applications submitted outside the primary application period may be held for review at the start of the next fiscal year.

  • Submit six images of your current artwork. If applicable, include at least one image that demonstrates professional framing.

  • An artist statement and résumé are optional but strongly encouraged.

    • The VAC Chair will communicate with you by email.

    • Be sure to check your spam or junk folder for updates.

  • Applications are typically reviewed within 4–6 weeks after submission.

    • Because the Visual Arts Cooperative meets monthly, additional review time may be necessary.

  • Applicants who are not accepted may receive feedback from the jury.

    • You are encouraged to use this feedback to strengthen your portfolio and reapply during the next fiscal year.
